Advocacy Strengthens TRSA’s Efforts for Reusable Healthcare PPE and PFAS Filtration Funding https://www.almnet.org/news/670742/ https://www.almnet.org/news/670742/ Washington DC., Apr. 17, 2024 — The advocacy efforts by the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) continue to bolster the drive toward greater utilization of reusable healthcare personal protective equipment (PPE) garments. Additionally, TRSA is actively working to enhance our industry’s access to federal funding for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pretreatment.

On April 11, TRSA members convened on Capitol Hill for a series of 118 meetings with congressional offices. Their collective dialogue resonated with policymakers, reinforcing the importance of reusable PPE and federal funding support for PFAS filtration. These discussions took place during the second day of TRSA’s 14th Annual Legislative Conference, April 10-11, at The Madison Hotel in Washington, DC

The collective efforts of TRSA members have already generated momentum. During the 2023 TRSA Legislative Conference, representatives encouraged lawmakers to sign a letter urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to study the benefits of reusable PPE and explore avenues for increased adoption. Thirteen representatives endorsed the letter, which was dispatched in June.

At this year’s Hill Day, the TRSA contingent asked Congress to support increasing the operating threshold of re-usable textile PPE to a minimum of 50 percent of healthcare facilities’ inventory. Currently, reusables comprise an estimated 10 percent of the U.S. market. Increasing that figure would improve environmental protection, save money and enhance supply-chain security while helping to safeguard employee and patient safety.

Some types of PFAS – chemicals found in an array of consumer and industrial products – have been linked by researchers and government agencies to adverse health conditions. This has prompted concerns, including fed-eral standards issued on April 10 that targeted their presence in drinking water. These regulatory mandates for calling for the removal of PFAS from wastewater will result in onerous PFAS-discharge limits to sewers nation-wide. Fabric manufacturers are finding PFAS substitutes for garments that now use PFAS to provide barrier properties (for example, for use in infection control and fluid resistance,). Depending on how quickly substi-tutes are developed and put into service, and what types of PFAS are regulated, a typical linen/uniform laundry could have little choice but to invest in the high-six-figure range or more for pretreatment equipment.

The federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) passed last year allocated $10 billion to EPA for removing PFAS and other emerging contaminants. Congress can establish financial incentives, such as tax credits or grants, to help businesses offset the costs associated with implementing wastewater filtration of PFAS. On Hill Day, TRSA asked policymakers to contact EPA to request that they allocate BIL funds to make such incentives available to our industry.

A first-time Legislative Conference attendee said he found the program's education and outreach efforts to lawmakers extremely valuable. Ryan Swartz, VP of operations for Pure Star, Las Vegas, found the overall event to be was very insightful ., “I felt it was beneficial to have more operator members, vendors and suppliers at Hill Day to support the industry because there is new legislation and new parameters that our business will be

exposed to,” Swartz said. He added that he felt his first Hill Day experience was very interesting. He enjoyed advocating for the industry and the opportunities it provided to be heard.

TRSA remains committed to advancing the reusable PPE agenda, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the safety and sustainability of our industry. For further information, please visit TRSA’s website.

Standard Textile Takes on "Planet vs. Plastics" Challenge by Eliminating Poly Bags from US-Made Prod https://www.almnet.org/news/670730/ https://www.almnet.org/news/670730/ CINCINNATIApril 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Standard Textile Co., Inc., a global leader in the healthcare and hospitality textile markets, proudly announces its latest initiative in environmental sustainability on Earth Day 2024. In alignment with this year's theme of "Planet vs. Plastics," the company is eliminating poly bags from its US-made products, marking a significant stride towards reducing plastic waste and preserving our planet.

The newly introduced packaging solution features cartons with an environmentally friendly coated interior, ensuring product protection while reducing the reliance on plastic. By implementing this innovative approach, Standard Textile anticipates a reduction of up to 110,000 pounds of plastic annually.

"At Standard Textile, we recognize the urgent need to address the global challenge of plastic pollution," said Melanie Boyle, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Standard Textile. "Our decision to eliminate poly bags from our US-made products reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship and aligns with the spirit of Earth Day 2024's theme, 'Planet vs. Plastics.'"

Despite this eco-friendly shift in packaging, Standard Textile products maintain their hallmark standards of quality and excellence. Products under the Room Ready for You® laundered with Tide® program will continue to arrive clean and fresh, ready to use right out of the box.

"We are proud to announce this change, because it's important for our customers to know that they are working with a company that shares a similar mindset of reducing plastic use," said Greg Eubanks, Group Vice President at Standard Textile. "Eliminating plastic in our packaging is just one example of the sustainable solutions we're focused on to minimize our environmental footprint and enhance the guest experience."

This initiative complements Standard Textile's broader sustainability efforts, including the recently launched Take-Back Recycling Program. Through this program, Standard Textile facilitates the recycling of retired linens, further reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. The Take-Back Recycling Program is currently available to the company's hospitality customers with plans to explore the viability for customers in other markets.

Record breaking Attendance at ALM’s 2024 IMPACT Conference https://www.almnet.org/news/669589/ https://www.almnet.org/news/669589/ Record breaking Attendance at ALM’s 2024 IMPACT Conference

Richmond, Kentucky April 8, 2024

The Association for Linen Management (ALM’s) 2024 IMPACT conference took place in Salt Lake City recently with record breaking attendance and sponsor support. The conference experience included enhancements to the rapid business exchange IMPACTful Connections and more educational and business development opportunities than ever before.

Featured presenters at the conference included Troy Nix, whose presentation, the Cadence of Leadership, brought the group to attention and Derek Parra, Olympic Medalist, who shared his humbling and inspiring Reflections in the Ice.

John Stokes, Vice President of Regional Sales at Jensen shared, “I found both keynote speakers to be extremely passionate about their accomplishments as they should.  Troy truly displayed a passion for leadership and the outcomes of successful leadership. Derek’s message about perseverance truly shows hard work pays off.”

The expanded educational programming at the conference provided participants with a selection of topics that covered aspects in linen management, change management, leadership, staffing, and operational compliance.

“After two decades in the industry, it took me some time to become a part of ALM. However, in just a few meetings, I gained more knowledge than I had in the preceding 4-5 years,” shared Josh Slone, Complete Textile Services. “What I appreciate about ALM is its top-notch education, networking opportunities, and its invaluable contribution to both my business's performance and my personal and professional development.”

One of the notable sessions, Collaborative Synergy, included presentations from association counterparts, TRSA, ARTA, IAHTM, and HLAC, who shared updates on their respective organizations along with avenues of current and potential collaborative efforts.

“I particularly enjoyed the session titled, “Collaborative Synergy: Uniting the Laundry & Linen Industry” because each presenting organization is one, I actively engage with. Cecil Lee of Standard Textiles continued, “…it’s gratifying to witness collaborative efforts towards proactive solutions.”

IMPACT also provided many opportunities for networking and business development. From the casual conversations at breaks and during social events, to the tabletop displays and one-on one conversations during IMPACTful Connections, many opportunities were sparked.

New member, first time attendee, and first-time sponsor, Randy Gregory with R.W. Martin said, “I thought IMPACTful Connections, or “speed dating” was very valuable and I loved the 10-minute meet sessions.  The way I look at it is if we gain one customer from it, we’ve made it! I believe we will get many new customers from this one event. I found it quite impactful.”

“We’re thrilled with all of the feedback pointing to this being the best ALM event ever.” said Sarah Brobeck, ALM’s Executive Director. “That means the pressure is on to take the 2026 IMPACT to even greater success and we’re up for the challenge.”

Triple D Uniform & Linen Service adds new LAVATEC washer extractor to navigate new markets growth https://www.almnet.org/news/645424/ https://www.almnet.org/news/645424/

The old axiom that everything is bigger in Texas is alive and well. The state’s population is among the fastest growing in the U.S., and well-run businesses like Triple D Uniform & Linen Service are responding to the challenge. A local staple in Houston for over 50 years, they recently expanded service to markets in central Texas and turned again to LAVATEC to help handle the new demand.

“We recently purchased a LAVATEC LX460 washer extractor to join the two smaller washers from them that we’ve had in service for 16 years,” stated Jacy Henderson, Triple D’s Vice President. “These are workhorse machines and suit our needs perfectly. The newest machine has proven to be just as solid as the other two.”

UNX-Christeyns focus at Southwest Drycleaners Association Event https://www.almnet.org/news/637504/ https://www.almnet.org/news/637504/ Greenville, N.C. – April 13, 2023 – For UNX-Christeyns (booth 536), this year’s Southwest Drycleaners Association’s 2023 Cleaners Showcase presents a two-fold advantage. It provides the opportunity to network with professional drycleaners from 10 states, and also allows attendees to learn more about the company’s products and rich history. The event takes place April 28-30 at the Irving Convention Center in Dallas.

Terry Hammond, Senior Vice President at UNX-Christeyns, enthusiastically expressed his anticipation for the upcoming Cleaners Showcase. “This event is an invaluable opportunity to establish and nurture professional connections. With the gradual resumption of in-person events post-pandemic, the prospect of engaging with individuals face-to-face again is nothing short of exhilirating,” he said.

“The upcoming opportunity to showcase our company’s philosophy and values will be a vital milestone for those  unfamiliar with our brand. Our unwavering passion for the industry and commitment to innovation drives us to continously elevate our products and services. Our integrity and mission are inextricably linked, and our dedication to putting customers’ needs first sets us apart from our competitors. We look forward to sharing our story and leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.”

Hammond believes the enduring success of the UNX-Christeyns Cole & Wilson brand has proven to be an undeniable asset to dry cleaners located in the Southern region from Nevada to Mississippi. The brand’s unwavering commitment to delivering tangible benefits to its clients is the driving force behind its continued growth and acclaim. He said the company takes great pride in the brand’s success and is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue delivering exceptional value to loyal customers.

“As a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence, our distribution network in the Southern region has consistently remained a cornerstone of our success,” he explained. “Our real time inventory management ensures our customers are assured of timely and efficient service. The UNX-Christeyns Cole & Wilson brand is widely regarded as a preferred choice by our loyal customer base, and for good reason. Our products are unrivaled in quality and performance, making us the top destination for dry and wet cleaning solutions. We take great pride in this achievement and remain steadfast in our pursuit of delivering the very best to our valued customers.”

The UNX-Christeyns Cole & Wilson branded SULTRA line is one of the solutions that will be showcased. These high performance dry cleaning offerings include SULTRASOFT detergents that produce exceptional brightness and a fresh scent while removing water-soluble soils. A spotting chart in the booth will explain how SULTRASPOT is an excellent line of spotting agents for dry and wet cleaning.

Greg Toombs, the Sales Director for UNX-Christeyns who is based in Dallas, said SULTRASPOT’s advantages extend beyond removing basic soils such as paint, oil and grease, as well as ink, protein and tannin stains.

“The SULTRA product line is ideal for fine washable and dry cleanable textiles, and that is why so many of our dry cleaning and shirt laundry customers have used it since it has been available in the U.S. It is very effective, easy to use, and doesn’t require a lot of re-cleaning, so it saves time and labor costs,” he explained. “These are Prop 65 compliant products with no volatile compounds in the spotting agents. Newer challenges, such as gel pen ink, are some of the hardest stains to remove. Many other products can’t remove those types of stains, but the SULTRASPOT line is successful in this area.”

Toombs invites all Cleaners Showcase attendees to visit booth 536 to learn more about the advantages they might be missing out on.

“The bottom line is our dry/wet cleaning solutions are designed with the customer in mind. We can provide you with exceptional products and services while minimizing the work and maximizing your profit.”

ALM’s 2023 IMPACT Conference Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Attendance https://www.almnet.org/news/635167/ https://www.almnet.org/news/635167/

Richmond, Kentucky March 20, 2023 – The Association for Linen Management (ALM) sold out their 2023 IMPACT Conference, held last week in Charleston, South Carolina, exceeding pre-pandemic attendance levels! This rapid event recovery reflects IMPACT’s reputation for high-level education in an intimate environment, which is ripe with opportunity for business development, problem solving, and strategic thinking.

“The energy and enthusiasm of attendees was off the charts,” shared James Mangini, RLLD, ALM Board President and Senior Director of Supply Chain Logistics for MaineHealth. “The amount of networking that took place, business being conducted, and minds being challenged and enlightened with actionable takeaways from the educational programming was phenomenal.”

Featured presenters at the conference included Jerry Holl, author of the three-time international Award-winning book, Downhills Don’t Come Free; Dan Lundergan, MHA, CEO of University of Utah Health, Hospitals and Clinics; and Jay Juffre, Executive Vice President of ImageFIRST.

This year’s conference premiered a new business-to-business forum, IMPACTful Connections, featuring one-on-one meetings between allied trades professionals and laundry and linen operators. Participants raved about the opportunity to learn about products and services.

“We’re always looking for new innovations and open to looking at new equipment in the laundry,” said Paul Jewison, RLLD, CLLM, and President of Textile Care Services in Rochester, MN. “Our company was able to meet with eleven companies representing equipment, textiles, and laundry bags. This was an efficient way to learn about a lot of new products and technology in a short period of time. We’ll definitely participate next year.”

Working to make the new IMPACTful Connections beneficial for both the operators and the vendors was a key focus for ALM staff in planning the new event. The success of that effort was seen by the comments from those who exhibited as well.

“ALM’s foresight to create meaningful ways to connect with our customers, such as IMPACTful Connections, is why our organization chooses to participate as a top-tier sponsor,” expressed Nicole Grubich, RLLD, CLLM, Vice President US-Business Unit, MIP, Inc.

MIP returned for the sixth time as an exclusive sponsor of IMPACT’s most popular evening event, which was held at Charleston’s highest rooftop venue, The Pour Taproom. During the event, attendees and ALM’s Board and staff bid their final farewells to retiring executive director, Linda Fairbanks, who was honored with a champagne toast and poignant speeches from long-time colleagues.

“We’re already strategizing for an even bigger conference in 2024! This is just the beginning of many great things to come for ALM and its members,” said Sarah Brobeck, MBA, RLLD, ALM’s Executive Director. “We’re also working on new avenues to continue providing valuable resources and innovative ways for members to connect throughout the year.”

ALM Announces UNX-Christeyns Support for ALM Quick Start https://www.almnet.org/news/634305/ https://www.almnet.org/news/634305/ Richmond, KY – March 9, 2023 – Recognizing the value and need to help educate newcomers to the industry, the Association for Linen Management (ALM) created ALM Quick Start. This online eLearning opportunity allows incoming textile care industry professionals to quickly and effectively gain a consistent industry framework. UNX-Christeyns recently joined ALM in supporting the program as part of their ongoing efforts to provide the best possible resources for the betterment of the industry.

ALM Quick Start was initially introduced with a soft launch at The Clean Show last summer in Atlanta. The non-profit trade organization’s mission is to advance industry excellence, and it has developed multiple education, training and certification programs. ALM Quick Start represents the next phase of an ambitious campaign where supervisors and managers can receive training to better understand the industry and their business.

“One of the main concerns we are hearing from our members is the shortage of skilled labor. There simply are not enough workers and it is impacting their operations,” acknowledged ALM’s Executive Director, Sarah Brobeck, MBA, RLLD.

“We believe education is part of the solution, and that’s exactly what ALM can provide. ALM Quick Start is designed to shorten the learning curve and help new hires in supervisory and management roles get up-to-speed with accurate and consistent information. Having well-informed and trained employees will improve efficiency and aid in employee retention. UNX-Christeyns understands this value and we are truly pleased to be joining forces with them.”

ALM Quick Start focuses on three disciplines: wash chemistry, equipment management, and production & operations. Laundry supervisors, vendor salespeople and service workers can complete the program in as little as three hours, and the courses are available for up to 90 days after they enroll.

“We applaud ALM for the work they do. They have been a trusted and longtime go-to source for the industry,” said Josh Lilley, CEO of UNX-Christeyns. “ALM Quick Start is another shining example of their leadership efforts. We view this initiative as a critical component to ensure a stronger future for our industry. That is why we support ALM Quick Start and plan to help grow it together with ALM.”

ALM’s 2023 IMPACT Conference Nearly Sold Out! https://www.almnet.org/news/632334/ https://www.almnet.org/news/632334/ Richmond, Ky., February 17, 2023 — Incredible demand from the industry for in-person learning and networking, coupled with IMPACT’s reputation has attendance for the 2023 IMPACT Conference nearing record levels! Industry professionals are ready to come back to in-person for experiences that cannot be duplicated in the virtual world.

“We are doing all we can to serve every member who wants the experience of IMPACT,” said ALM Executive Director Sarah Brobeck, MBA, RLLD. “I personally know the value of ALM events, so we're working to find more space to accommodate every potential attendee, although the venue’s capacity obviously has a limit, and we’re nearly there!”

IMPACT attendees are excited about one of Brobeck’s first innovations to IMPACT, IMPACTful Connections, where ALM pairs laundry and linen professionals with suppliers of products and services in a fast-paced business exchange.

“As a vendor myself, I know the benefit of the connections made during face-to-face events,” said ALM Board Member Phil Hart. “That’s why I’m so excited about IMPACTful Connections. I’m certain this opportunity will bring new, collaborative solutions for everyone involved.”

“This is the start of something exciting. There is a shift in the industry to move forward, into growth rather than simply survival,” said ALM Board President Jim Mangini, RLLD. “This is confirmed by the level of registrations we are seeing. The 2023 IMPACT Conference is shaping up to be one to remember!”

ALM has only a handful of spots available and will accept attendees on a waitlist basis when those spots are filled.
